If you understand the mechanism, you can explain any treatment to a patient and set expectations you can meet.
The two proteins that matter most
Collagen gives skin structure and firmness. Elastin lets it stretch and spring back. Both are produced by fibroblasts in the dermis. Collagen production slows with age and existing collagen degrades faster than it is replaced.
What you see on the surface
As collagen density falls, skin loses firmness and fine lines appear, particularly where the skin moves most. Elastin loss contributes to sagging. Fat pads shift and thin, and facial bone changes too, so the whole structure of the face changes shape, not just the skin.
What accelerates the process
Sun exposure is the biggest external driver of visible skin ageing, breaking down collagen and elastin through UV damage. Smoking, pollution, poor sleep and diet all contribute, and genetics sets a baseline that varies between individuals.
What each treatment does
Patients often group these together. You should not.
Skin boosters support hydration and skin quality.
Microneedling creates controlled micro injury that prompts the skin’s own repair response.
Peels use controlled exfoliation to renew the skin surface, with depth depending on the peel used.
Retinoids and daily sun protection have the strongest supporting evidence for slowing visible ageing.
What treatments cannot do
No topical product or non-surgical treatment can fully replace collagen lost over decades. Being upfront about that builds trust and protects you from over promising.
